Natural Gas Jobs 2012

Happy New Year everyone. I just wanted to touch base regarding Natural Gas Jobs 2012, and give a few updates from what I am hearing out there. A lot of this information you may already know but in the event you don't this update will hopefully be helpful in some way.

Before I start, thank you to all of my readers and subscribers for your comments, calls, and overall support and help. It means more than you will ever know. Now regarding this blog, just like the business, things change. While at one time training each other and helping landowners get familiar with the permitting process was priority, bringing employers and employees together to benefit both, is no doubt our number one goal going into the new year. Jobs, Jobs, Jobs, and more Jobs. Right? That is 100% what I am hearing.

Therefore, if any Permit Agent Companies, Seismic Acquisition Organizations, or basically if any hiring managers from small, medium, or larger companies such as Chesapeake, Devon, etc. happen to read this, please feel free to leave a comment below, or you are welcome to send a confidential email to myself only at followme@jobsnaturalgas.com. Of course that is if you are looking for Seismic Permit Agents today, in the near future, or really anytime in the future. If you do send an email please advise who, what, when, and where, etc., and I will post an article with the details. I speak with Permit Agents mostly, but please know we have folks who have Project Management experience, Bird Dogs, Mineral, Surface, or both. If it's Seismic we most likely have several that meet the requirements.

Having been a hiring manager for Sprint Communications myself I can vouch for the talent and experience that is out there. And I know first hand because I am talking to them, and looking at resumes. So from a recruiting standpoint, just like any recession, it is a great time to be hiring, if the budget allows. People are hungry, flexible, willing to travel or move (for the most part), and from what I can tell are mostly "The cream of the crop" in the Oil and Gas Industry.

Back From Being Out of Pocket

Hey everyone. Hope you and your families are all doing good out there. I had an opportunity to get my Texas Adjusters License, therefore took advantage of it but my passion is still permitting. Lets just say I am not in my 20's or 30's anymore, and some of these roofs have a steeper pitch than I would prefer.

Anyway, then I got one of the most dreaded letters you can find in the mailbox, right up there with either an unexpected bill, or an IRS audit. Yep, almost as bad.. a good ole' Jury Duty request. Needless to say after a butt load of profanities on the way back to the house, I started thinking twice about voting. I want to do my civil duty but dang it could not have come at a worse time. You can bet I am voting too.. with this being the most important presidential election in my lifetime.

But enough about me. Just wanted to share a few things going on outside of the seismic arena. I also want to send a special thanks to everyone who left words of encouragement, available jobs, and any help that has assisted us in gaining employment.

From what little I have been able to gather it appears the "hot spots" have stayed pretty much the same. If anyone knows different please feel free to comment. Especially if it's work in the the DFW Texas area.. lol. But seriously I think most of us are willing to travel just about anywhere if it's been a while.

Good Luck to all! I will have some new Natural Gas Job Boards to share soon!

Thanks again.

I am also working on a fourth Job Board that should be out this week, at which time plans are to consolidate them together, since they all pick up jobs the others miss. For now, please bear with me as I finish everything up. As of this morning we have 3 Job Boards you are welcome to check each day, and catch the new jobs as soon as they post. Thanks again for all your support.

Oil n Gas Jobs

I just wanted to let everyone know I am adding a new Oil n Gas Jobs Board link. I am learning that a lot of employers subscribe to either just one or many different companies, depending on their budget. Therefore to locate all of the jobs out there it's necessary to check each one. I will try to narrow it down to at least the Oil and Gas Industry for now. I hope this helps a little. Please keep the comments coming. Good luck everyone! More links to be added soon.

Natural Gas Explosion

On September 9, 2010 there was a major gas explosion in San Bruno, CA. The blast was due to a rupture in a 24-inch gas pipe, which resulted in a 60-100 foot high fireball. One witness reported that she initially felt something that felt like an earthquake, which was followed by a loud rumbling sound: “It sounded like a train was running right outside my door.” When she looked out, she saw the flaming plume.

You Are Never Alone

I wanted to take a moment and sincerely thank each and every one of you for your emails, comments, and words of encouragement. We often underestimate the power of giving friends, loved ones, and "yes" even total strangers our support. The truth of the matter is times are tough. More and more people are finding themselves out of work each and every single day.

Being unemployed is a very scary time, especially for those of us that have a family to support. However, please know that you are not alone. First of all, you have God on your side. Secondly, you have people around you that really do care. Now don't get me wrong, we all have those certain acquaintances that enjoy our struggles. However this gives us a great opportunity to find out who our true friends are.

Keep in mind that tough times also open the door to making new friends. How often have you met some of the best people during the most challenging times? I certainly have. This is a great opportunity for all of us to pitch in and help our brothers and sisters in the natural gas business, and/or any other industry. Sometimes just listening to each other can be our best gift.

Again, I wanted to thank all of your for taking time to read my articles, and believing in me enough to ask for my support. It is a true honor to get your emails, comments, and phone calls. From the heart.. it is like gold.

Please remember. You Are Never Alone.

Eagle Ford Shale

Hope everyone is doing good. Sorry for going so long in between articles, but I am currently working down south in the Eagle Ford Shale. We are finishing up line clearing, have started laying out, and should start shaking this thing before too long. If your reading this and happen to be looking for work, you might consider pursuing South Texas. There is a lot of work going on down here, therefore if you have any contacts in the area you might want to give them a call.

I am also hearing there is still a lot of work in North Texas (Barnett Shale), Louisiana, and Pennsylvania. If I hear of any other hot areas I will let you guys know. Please do the same by leaving a comment.

Good Luck Everyone! EAGLE FORD SHALE MAP

Video Interviews Idea?

I would like to run an idea by you guys and gals. As my readers, subscribers, and friends, I make a lot of decisions based on your feedback. An idea came to me a while back and I would like to get your thoughts.

As I stated yesterday, our main priority is to gain employment for all asap, or upgrade from your current job. I don't have to tell you that competition is at it's highest level, and anything we can do to set ourselves apart would be in our best interest.

I can definitely say this, after reviewing about 20 resumes, If you guys are even half as impressive in person as you are on paper, then someone would be crazy not to hire you. I think that the problem is often 2 fold, in that the hiring manager has a stack of resumes that either never get worked, or they get word through another agent that a buddy or family member needs work. You know.. the word of mouth.. or "knows somebody" thing.

But we all also know there are usually a few agents in every office that are simply not cutting it. My idea is to have a place where the hiring manager can go to look online, when someone is not producing, etc. My thoughts are that a video would be ideal. This gives you an opportunity to shine, as close to "in person" as it gets. You put on some starched jeans, nice shirt, and basically sell yourself. Then, with your permission, we place it on my site, with a nice profile and resume attached. Of course I will work the advertising and recruiting side of things. This really gives the hiring manager an opportunity to see your body language, personality type, people skills, etc. Personal appearance can be huge.

This way when the boss is fed up with one of their agents, or simply needs to fill a few spots, they can pull up your beautiful mug (LOL).. and say "Hey, I like this guy.. or gal", and on our side we will make sure that your phone number, email, etc. is available for them to make immediate contact, if they so choose.

Now my thoughts are you can have someone interview you (wife or husband maybe?), or I could come interview you in person, if your fairly close (with video rolling), or we can set something set up online through Skype, etc.

Again, I am just throwing this out there. So please feel free to rip it apart, or give insight. Please play devils advocate. I have tried to find a down side, but I am really having a hard time finding very many. And I know there are obstacles I haven't thought of yet.

Regarding future networking: It's all about who you know!

Just right quick.. I am also going to establish a forum and chat room on http://jobsnaturalgas.com within the next 30 days. This not only gives me flexibility as a publisher and site owner, but will also give you options as a reader, subscriber, and possibly an author.. if you so choose. You all have a lot of experience to contribute, and if you enjoy writing or making videos this will be an excellent opportunity to share, network, and get hired.

Please leave a comment with your thoughts, or shoot me an email if your more comfortable keeping it confidential. My email again is followme@jobsnaturalgas.com

Thank you all again for your time and help. May God Bless you and your families.

More Work Means Difficult Decisions

I am hesitant to say a whole lot about this, for fear of what tomorrow brings, however it does appear that work is picking up in areas that have seen at least a year long slow phase. Granted there have been a lot of jobs in Pennsylvania and other areas during this time, but speaking for us Texans, we are starting to see opportunities again in our own great state.

With this increase in jobs comes "gut check time", especially for those of us with families. And especially if you were fortunate to have worked close to home in the past. But anyone that has been in this business for any length of time knows you really have to take advantage of the work when it presents itself. However it is never an easy decision to be away from family. Do we cry about it? No, but it's not only a difficult decision when we get that call, but also brings up many adjustments that some of us are just now experiencing. One of which is home sickness.

If you are a Seismic Permit Agent away from family for the first time, stuck in a hotel for what is really an undetermined time, hang in there. Each day does get better. Does it ever get easy? No, but it does get better as work picks up.

I write about this because there are people who read this blog that know all of this all too well already, those that will be faced with this decision soon, and readers that have no idea what Seismic Permit Agents go through to put food on the table. Are we the only profession that does this? Absolutely not, but there are a lot of Seismic Permit Agents out there experiencing these challenges for the very first time.

The truth of the matter is this. Some of us handle it better than others. So as I am writing this I ask for your prayers and kind words of encouragement.

Please stay tuned as I write about regulatory issues, and how the job differs on each new project.

Thank you again for finding interest in The Life of a Seismic Permit Agent.

Oil and Gas Exploration

Hey everybody,, I don't know this for sure, but heard over the Thanksgiving Holiday that several big name companies are gearing up to increase Oil and Gas Exploration, which should lead to a surge in Oil and Gas Production as well. I won't mention any names since I don't have confirmation, however if you haven't heard already you might want to check job posting's for the top 3 anyway. I am sure you guys and gals probably know which exploration companiess I am talking about, and may have heard all this before me, but did want to get the word out just in case.

I will do some additional research this weekend and see if I can narrow it down a bit. Please feel free to leave a comment with anything you have been hearing as well. Best of luck!

The Life of a Seismic Permit Agent ... do I own my mineral rights?

This is a question that we are asked quiet a bit in the field. The problem is it's either very quick and easy to find out (if you own your minerals), or extremely time consuming, frustrating, and possibly even get expensive. The first thing you want to do is check the deed to your house. For most landowners it tends to be very evident if you don't. My experience has been it is either right there and easy to locate, or it can be somewhat difficult to find out. Another suggestion would be to check the courthouse records, and if nothing else reach out to someone in the legal field that specializes in these services.

For all land owners the decision of how much time and money to invest can be a tough one, especially when you are in the position of not knowing for sure what the future holds. The best advice that I can give right now is to reach out and ask friends or neighbors that have recently been through this before. I know this may not help a whole lot, but at least gives you a place to start.

NOTE: If you have been through the process of finding out if you own your minerals, and happen to be reading this, please feel free to share any input in the comments section below. In the meantime I will continue to ask around, and post any additional information that I learn concerning owning your minerals, and how to find out if you do.

I MADE IT !!!!

Update on "How do I know if I own my mineral rights?"

Since my last article I have learned that if it (mineral rights) is not stated on your deed there is chance you may own them. Now please don't hold me to that 100% but after asking several landowners and people in the business this was what I learned. I had heard it explained that way before but was hesitant to say for sure. Anyway, if anyone reading this has experienced anything otherwise please leave a comment and I will pass it on accordingly, and check further if needed. I hope that helps.

GPS can be a LIFESAVER

Anyone who has ever been a permit agent in the field has been lost at one time or another. Nothing is worse than getting lost out in the middle of nowhere. Something that has really helped me is my Blackberry cell phone. I have immediate access to the Internet, and most importantly GPS. A few months ago I was headed down highway 67 when I heard about a wreck up ahead. Actually what happened was an 18 wheeler dumped an entire load of pipe in the middle of the highway causing a wreck, and blocked traffic from passing through at all. I bailed off on some county road, trying to bypass everything, and started to get lost. Luckily I had GPS on my phone and was able to maneuver my way through the country roads and found my destination. I will check with my affiliate partners on a regular basis and start posting promotions on smartphones, and other products that help while we are out there.

Example of "Interlocking"
Example of "Interlocking"

Locks on gates, access, and interlocking

One of the most important responsibilities of a seismic permit agent is gaining access. Meaning a way for the surveyors and crew to get in the property, without delay. After we make sure the gate is of proper width, and the road is sufficient for holding the weight (of the vibe trucks), then we need to work with the landowner regarding locks. Most locks either have a combination, or key lock. It's also important to document the combination or code to a gate on the stipulation report prior to submitting a signed permit.

If you are working with a combination or key lock it's also very important to interlock (please see above picture). This enables the surveyors, permit agents, line crew, etc. to get in (aka gain access). This also gives the landowner and/or tenant the chance to allow only certain people and/or companies inside the property. If you see multiple locks linked together it's usually somebody like the gas company, landowner, and anyone else that has permission for access. This may be obvious to some but we do get a lot of questions in regards to interlocking. I hope this helps.

Natural Gas Stocks a Bargain

Robert Hagstrom Legg Mason Growth Fund

Despite high prices for natural gas, stocks of exploration and drilling companies continue to sell at modest price/earnings (P/E) ratios, says fund manager Robert Hagstrom. Investors figure that soaring energy demand will slacken amid a weak economy, and gas prices will back off. But demand for clean-burning natural gas is likely to climb as utilities aim to reduce pollution from coal.

Hagstrom's favorite natural gas company stocks include...

Nabors Industries, Ltd. (NBR). Drilling for gas in the United States and Mexico, this company reports fat profit margins. The stock sells for a price/earnings (P/E) ratio of 14, compared with an average P/E ratio of 20 for the Standard & Poor's 500 Stock Index. Recent share price: $41.75.

XTO Energy, Inc. (XTO). Revenues for this oil and gas explorer are rising at a 43% annual rate, and the stock sells for a P/E ratio of just 16. Recent share price: $54.14.

Seismic Permit vs. Mineral Lease

Something I commonly hear from landowners are questions or confusion regarding a Seismic Permit and a Gas Lease. From a landowner standpoint please keep in mind that when you sign a seismic permit it is just for exploration. Meaning you are normally not signing an ongoing agreement. It's a one time deal versus a gas lease that normally carries a 2 or 3 year termination period.

This may seem obvious to some who read this, however there is a lot of confusion out there. And honestly I can understand why. If I were not in the business I would be confused too, and sometimes I still am. For anyone that would like clarification just remember seismic is just "taking the picture underground", to explore your minerals for natural gas.

Seismic normally doesn't pay near as much per acre (than a lease), however it's the possibility of royalties that are key here. To me, as a landowner myself, that is how I try to view and explain it. Anyway, I hope that helps. If not please feel free to leave a comment at the bottom of the page or email me at glencumbie@yahoo.com. Good Luck!

Mounting your Laptop in your vehicle

Anyone who has ever been in the field knows that it is very easy to run off the road. I can hear agents laughing already. It's true. You get out there and your driving down some road looking for a house, holding a map, cup of coffee, and our laptop is flying all over the place. Now taking laptops out to the field is a new concept to some, but mark my word it will be the norm very soon. I mean with a laptop and Internet access you have everything needed to operate. The only problem is most of our front seats are a mess. Plus it becomes a huge safety issue. While trying to utilize our laptop we could easily run off the road and hurt ourselves, or run into someone else possibly causing a fatal accident. We have all had close calls reaching for this or reaching for that while driving. Anyway, if we equip ourselves with the proper tools not only will it be much safer out there for all, but we will be more efficient while working in the field. I think everyone will agree that our office is our vehicle. Therefore we need to make the necessary adjustments. I will continue searching for the best deals and post them accordingly. If anybody finds a better deal please feel free to leave a comment down below.

How far away should these seismic trucks be from a concrete foundation residential house. We were told 300' unless on low mode.

billyglen profile image

billyglen Hub Author 3 years ago

Benjamin, You are exactly right. We stay at least 300" from any structure; i.e. house, barn, etc. and even stay 600' from underground swimming pools. Great question... thanks so much for asking and visiting my site.-Glen C.

We leased our rights to a company about twenty years a go, for twenty years.

I guess they are ours again. They didn't do anything with them. Would have been nice if they had, we were suppose to get royalty payments.

Thank you James for your comment. I just added a Job Board to this site, however I am still tweaking it to narrow in on jobs that will mainly interest permit & mineral agents. Please give me another week or so and I will try to confirm some of the things I am hearing, and fine tune our job board to better fit everyone's needs. Please feel free to contact me "anytime" at glencumbie@yahoo.com. I am really proud of everybody for reaching out. Personally I have a hard time doing that sometimes due to pride.. but if we stick together and help each other God will take care of us. Thank you all for being such a strong inspiration.

Debbie Simpson 3 years ago

I came across your site as I was researching seismic companies. You've done a great job and I know how much it is appreciated. I am a landman looking for work and like others, I am interested in permitting.

Also, I would like to know what an observer does. Do you know?

Hi Debbie,

Thank you for your comment. I apologize for taking so long to respond. Since jobs are so hard to find right now, especially permitting work, I am going to broaden my search going forward. I will update the "job board" this week, and hopefully some opportunities might arise that we didn't know about. Thanks again Debbie for checking out my blog, and feel free to email me anytime @ glencmbie@yahoo.com. Please also keep my posted if you see changes (for the better) out there. I will do the same.

Like those above me, I've been in seismic for many years now, and have been layed off as well. I just found your site, and think it's nice to finally see an online presence that's geared toward our field.

If anything happens to come along, i'm certainly willing to pack up and head out at a moments notice.

Thanks again Billy, for the dedication and hard work you've put into the site.

Thank you Dustin. I hear you brother, it's just a tough time for all of us in this business.. right now anyway. Your kind words are very much appreciated, and you are very welcome. I am also going to post an rss feed for the "natural gas jobs board" in the next few days, and looking at possibly starting another project that I think will also help us keep an eye on the industry. Please keep in touch .. and continue to let me know your thoughts. God Bless..

Reading everyones posts, and no need to respond if nobody knows, "Is all the work overseas now and offshore?" I have been in this business since '92 and I know quite a bit about the ins and outs / ups and downs. Never seen it this grim!

billyglen Hub Author 2 years ago

Sam, thank you for your comment. I know buddy.. it's very grim here in North Texas. There are still several well sites in the area, but the "boom" is gone.. here anyway. I did just post a few new jobs on the RSS feed above. I hope someone is able to benefit from the postings. God Bless you and your family & I wish all you the best.

Bryan 2 years ago

Good luck finding a job as a permit agent in these times. The companies still going have an elite group of personnel they are struggling to keep busy. I have been really lucky to avoid time off and be one of the youngest in the business while working for the largest company in North America. I have worked my tail off on numerous projects to gain the respect from several clients. At one time there was 300 agents and now we are down to less than 10. Hopefully things will pick up next year. For those who have been laid off or let go remember when you get going again not to be average but go the extra mile. If they want 7 city lots permitted a day get 10. It will help when the hard times come. Starting when I was 18 and 5 years later is know this a cut throat business and only

the best will thrive and keep work.

Bryan, thank you for your comment. First of all congrats on being part of the remaining 10 out of 300. That says a lot about you. I just updated the jobs RSS Feed again, and will post any important information going forward, that may come my way. Thanks again. glen

I can't thank you enough for taking the time to post for everyone. God Bless you brother.

Can anyone honestly say Billy Geln has helped you get a job or fill you full of B.S. with his job board full of no existing jobs. Just saying.

seismic1 20 months ago

Dear Aggie Fan

It's obvious by your handle that you are a few pickles short of a barrel. Must be hard on you being a dipsh*t.

Billy is doing some good work here. Give the man some credit and respect.

billyglen profile image

billyglen Hub Author 20 months ago

Aggie Fan,

I do appreciate your feedback, however please understand that the Job Board that I am using is pulled manually by 2 different "Search" terms. Those being "natural gas jobs", and "oil and gas jobs", in the United States. I will start updating the board more often. I have been trying to do it weekly, but will do my best to start updating it every few days. Keep in mind that there are also 2 different opportunities to "Search" for additional jobs. They are there at all times and you can break it down by your city, state, etc. Also understand times are get even tougher, as I can see first hand by the reduction in jobs to choose from when posting. Especially over the last few weeks. I will also add more links to other job boards so you can "click out" to other sites that may better meet your standards. I am also here in the event that one of my contacts calls me asking if I know anyone looking for a job in a particular area, or willing to travel. If I have your resume on hand I forward it. But you are right, in the sense that I don't proactively go around trying to help you get a job. At some point you have to do that yourself.

Seismic1,

Thank you for your support and appreciation. It's readers like yourself that keep me going.

God Bless,

Glen

Just checking in Billy. I am still out of work and have people that don't believe in hiring a newbie. I feel this would be a perfect fit for me because of my diverse background in dealing with people while sitting at their kitchen tables. Since getting out of college I've dealt with soon to be new parents to seniors dealing with medicare, as well as multi-millionaires to the average blue collar worker, so I know that I'm able to adapt to any situation that I come across. I love sports and love to workout. I would say competition is the main reason I'm able to get by in life. Competition also helps me be able to get other people where they want to go in life. There is a huge thrill about helping other people achive their goals!

As for experience within in the field of permitting, mineral research or working with seismic crews I have none, but what I do have is the ability to learn fast and the ability to stay on my toes while adapting to every client. When it comes to traveling or relocating, I will be able to do either. Wherever I am needed is good for me.

The best number to reach me is my cell: (832)647-8790.

billyglen Hub Author 7 months ago

Please accept my apologies everyone. Been out of pocket for a while. Hang in there Justin. I hear ya Brother. Some of us with years of experience are having a hard time finding work too. Keep praying and being strong. Training is always good but can be costly, however if you can get a decision maker somewhere to let you ride along with some of his experienced guys, and keep showing up without pay... he might just eventually bring you on. Some are able to do that and some are not. Just an "out of the box" idea.

Thanks again to all.

Seismic 1, Im really curious as to what your doing and where? Chump change or not?

Justin, You might start looking at another career field. After a year of trying to jump on the seismic ship and nothing, you might want to look somewhere else. Just being realistic.

For anyone else who has no experience and thinks they will jump into this business with the help of Billy Glenn and his job board. I feel sorry for ya. I have 10 years under my belt, never been laid off, sent home, extended break, etc. Take it from someone who knows, if your not a brother-in-law, son of a big shot, etc, stick to a 9 to 5 job. Sometimes the truth will slap you in the mouth so please do not keep getting strung along will bull sh*t leads.

seismic1 2 months ago

For those trying to land a permitting job with little or no experience, I say, keep trying. It is an industry that welcomes the downtrodden and desperate. You might get luck.

I knew of two boys that ran a Permitting Agency out of Tyler Texas back in the 90s that would hire any jackleg that came through the door. They were successful, until they weren’t. Beside, seismic permitting is not exclusive to those with education or experience.

Papercuts is right in that most would be much better off finding themselves a nice little 9 to 5 job. Unless, of course, their Daddy-in-Law runs the scam –- excuse me, Exploration Company -- and feels inclined to throw them a bone with some meat on it.

Papercuts, we still use the handle “Seismic1” occasionally but it has been many years since we traveled the seismic circuit…thank God.

chump change, lol. I heard the term in an old movie and thought it was funny.

I have worked for chump change, been laid off, been sent home, been slow paid and on a couple of occasion no-paid. And, if you work seismic for very long all of those things may very well happen to you!

Papercuts 2 months ago

All I am saying is, if you have the oppurtunity to live a normal life, go to work then get off work, see familar faces everyday, not live in areas where locals hate oil and gas, etc, then stick to a 9 to 5.

My name is Nubia Moreno. I have been searching for work in the past month and I found an ad in the web and it caught my attention when I saw there is a project in the San Antonio Area. I am willing to relocate. I have been working as permit agent since 2008. I know everything that goes on from researching, creating a database to working with seismic crew in the field. I consider myself a well prepared individual that is eager to learn more and will not step back to any challanges. I have emailed to followme@jobsnaturalgas.com, my resume, where it shows in more detail my work experince.

Overall, I rate myself from a scale from 1-10 a 9. 10 being the most experinced. I have worked in all areas and have demonstrated my ability to accomplish my tasks.

I am very interested in working south texas area. I am also billingual.
